How to Raise the pH in Saltwater Aquariums

Saltwater has a pH ranging from 8.0 to 8.3. Although certain saltwater fish and organisms prefer slightly different pH levels, saltwater aquariums generally should have a pH between 7.5 to 8.5 to avoid causing stress on the fish. Since pH fluctuates during the day, it is important to measure the pH level of your saltwater aquarium at the same time each day. It is also important to ensure that your test kit or pH probe is accurate, since these instruments sometimes require recalibration. Adding a small amount of baking soda to your saltwater aquarium temporarily decreases pH but then creates a long-term increase in pH.

  • 1 cup dechlorinated water
  • pH test kit or meter

Instructions

    • 1

Mix one teaspoon of baking soda per 20 gallons of water in your tank into a cup of dechlorinated water. For example, if your saltwater aquarium is 60 gallons, mix three teaspoons in the cup of water.

    • 2

Add about a quarter cup of the mixture to the aquarium. Wait approximately half an hour. Continue adding a quarter cup of the solution every 30 minutes.

    • 3

Measure the pH level of your tank after 24 hours. It should show a slight upward increase.

    • 4

Measure pH every day, but allow a week for the pH to continue rising. If the pH is still not high enough, repeat the process.
