The Best Way to Catch Lots of Minnows

Minnows are tiny fish. While your child would like to scoop up these little fish and keep them as pets, most likely you are after them as bait. Minnows make great bait when you are looking to catch some bigger fish. They are also much easier to attach to your hook. The problem is that you must first catch the minnows. You can't catch a minnow with a fishing rod, but there are some better suggestions.
  1. Aquarium Net

    • If you are fishing for minnows in a small lake or pond, all you really need is an aquarium net and the ability to be quiet. These minnows swim together in schools. That makes it easy for you to catch a bunch of them at once. Just stick your net in the water and wait until you see the minnows swimming near it. The net must be facing to the left or right. Then bring your net up with a quick swoop. You may need to do this a few times to get the amount of minnows you need.

    Stockings or Socks

    • Take off your socks or get a pair of stockings. You can drag these across a lake or pond to collect the minnows. The opening to the sock or stocking must be facing to the left or to the right. This is a great method to use if you don't have any equipment. When you think some minnows have entered your sock or stocking, give the sock or stocking a quick jerk up. You should have a bucket nearby to put the minnows in.

    Drag Nets

    • Drag nets are the way you want to go if you need to catch a large amount of minnows. These nets will also work better if you need to catch the minnows in an ocean. You will need one individual to pull each side of the drag net. Pay attention to which direction the minnows are swimming. If they are swimming from left to right, then you should drag your net from right to left. You will be dragging the minnows along as you walk. Once you have collected enough in the drag net, pull the bottom of the drag net up quickly while still holding on to the top. Make sure your partner moves at the same speed so that none of the minnows escapes.
