How to Build a Filter for a Saltwater Aquarium

Aquarium filters are essential to the health of an aquarium. The filters keep debris and fecal matter from building up to toxic levels; the filters also help the biological process of the tank by assisting in the growth of healthy bacteria. However, store-bought filters are often expensive. Aquarium owners can easily make the filters at home.

  • Pantyhose or other thick mesh material
  • Container, such as a milk jug or water bottle, with open top

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the activated carbon into the container.

    • 2

Locate the intake valve of the aquarium powerhead or water pump. Wrap the water pump in pantyhose.

    • 3

Place the freshly wrapped water pump into the container.

    • 4

Make sure the water pump fits snugly into the activated carbon pieces. This will help keep the pump from moving around and prevent failure.

    • 5

Locate the "outtake" portion of the water pump or aquarium powerhead.

    • 6

Attach a 3-inch piece of aquarium tubing onto the outtake portion.

    • 7

Cut a piece of sponge to fit in snugly with the rest of the materials inside the container. Make certain the sponge is ingredient-free---many sponges come with wax, soap or perfumes embedded in them.

    • 8

Cut tiny holes in the sponge for the tubing.

    • 9

Place the sponge into the container. Make sure the aquarium tubing goes all the way through the sponge.

    • 10

Use a rubber band or string to hold the filter together.

    • 11

Place filter into the tank. For aesthetic reasons, you might wish to hide the filter, but make certain the flow of water isn't blocked.

    • 12

Activate the aquarium powerhead or water pump.
