How to Care for Starfish in an Aquarium

Starfish make fascinating pets because of their color and their ability to regenerate limbs and even whole bodies. They are called sea stars by most scientists because they are actually echinoderms, not fish. Starfish can live for five to 10 years if the right conditions are maintained in the aquarium. Starfish must live in a saltwater aquarium, where they move primarily in search of food and will keep mostly to the bottom of the tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Place starfish in a 30-gallon or larger tank. The tank should have full-spectrum lighting.

    • 2

Decorate the tank with rocks and decor that mimic the starfish's natural habitat.

    • 3

Measure the water's salinity levels with a hydrometer twice a week. Keep the salinity between 1.022 and 1.025 to maintain an environment similar to the natural starfish habitat. Check the water temperature with a thermometer, and maintain the temperature between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 4

Change 10 to 15 percent of the water volume every week. Use a quality pumping and filtration system.

    • 5

Feed starfish, which are carnivores, commercial frozen food. Smaller starfish can eat micro-algae. Starfish food is available at pet stores. Feed starfish small meals several times per week.
