How to Catch a Fairy Basslet

The fairy basslet resides in reefs throughout the tropics and can be found in water as shallow as 40 feet. The distinct vibrant colors of this fish make them a fun addition to an aquarium. Deep purples and bright yellows make them easy to find in reef crevices and dark corners. Catching a fairy basslet may be tricky but well worth the effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your scuba diving equipment on. Pack several glass jars and small closed top fishing net in your scuba bag. Make sure you are suited to dive as deep as 200 feet.

    • 2

Dive into water. Stay close to the reef without causing too much commotion to the surrounding water.

    • 3

Search for fairy basslets. Start at 40 feet and slowly swim deeper until you find them in the reef. Be very still around the school of fairy basslets.

    • 4

Slowly approach a fairy basslet. Use a swift hand movement to catch the fish with the fishing net. The net will loosely surround the fish.

    • 5

Place the fairy basslet into a glass jar and close the lid tightly.

    • 6

Remain at the depth you captured the fish for several minutes and slowly ascend to the surface. The fairy basslet needs time to decompress before being brought to the surface.
