Where and how does a whale shark sleep?

Where: Whale sharks are known to sleep both in the open water and near the surface. They have also been observed sleeping in sea caves or under ledges.

How: A whale shark's mode of sleep is often described as "drifting" or "resting". During this time their fins become still, suggesting they enter a state of complete rest. In this state, they are most vulnerable to predators which is why they tend to sleep in more secluded areas.
