Do swordfish lay eggs and where?

Swordfish are semelparous, which means they reproduce only once in their lifetime. They are broadcast spawners, and females lay millions of eggs in open ocean waters. The eggs are fertilized by males and hatch into larvae that drift in the ocean currents for several months. The larvae then metamorphose into juvenile swordfish and begin their predatory lifestyle. Swordfish typically spawn in warm tropical and subtropical waters, near the continental shelf.
