1. Opening wide: Blue whales open their mouths incredibly wide, engulfing a huge amount of water containing krill, small fish, and other tiny organisms.
2. Baleen filtering: Their baleen plates, which are made of keratin (the same material as our fingernails), act like a giant sieve. The baleen plates have bristles that trap the krill and other food items while the water is pushed out through the sides of the mouth.
3. Swallowing the meal: Once the water is expelled, the blue whale swallows the concentrated food trapped in the baleen plates.
They don't actively chase or capture individual fish. Their feeding strategy is based on filter feeding, which is extremely efficient for consuming large quantities of small prey.
