Tank Conditions for African Cichlids

Many species of African cichlid inhabit the varied water bodies of Africa. Setting up an aquarium that reflects these natural habitats will promote good health and natural behavior in your African cichlids.
  1. Types of African Cichlid

    • African cichlids come in a wide range of sizes and colors. Popular varieties include the cichlids of lakes Malawi, Victoria and Tanganyika, as well as the river dwelling Pelvicachromis genus.

    Tank Size

    • The ideal tank size depends on the adult size of the species and the aggression of your fish. For most African cichlids, 55 gallons is a good starting size.

    Water Temperature

    • A water temperature range of 76 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit suits many species of African cichlid.

    Hardness and pH

    • For most species of African cichlid, the water in your aquarium should be hard to very hard and should have a pH of at least 7.2.

    Tank Decorations

    • Rift lake species require rocks with numerous hides. Other species, such as Pelvicachromis pulcher, prefer a planted tank with dark caves for spawning.
