Information About Red Rim Flatworms

The majestic coral reefs of the ocean are home to thousands of exotic sea creatures. One of the smallest creatures on the reef is one of the ocean's sea worms -- the red-rim flatworm. From its distinctive defense mechanisms to its ability to repopulate itself, the red-rim flatworm is one of nature's most fascinating creatures.
  1. Habitat

    • The red-rim flatworm lives in or near the coral reefs of the Mediterranean Sea and temperate portions of the Atlantic ocean. It can be found from 5 to 60 meters from the ocean's surface.

    Appearance

    • Measuring an average of 5 centimeters to 2 inches in length, the red-rim flatworm is ribbon-like and characterized by a red rim around its sides, although it can be found in a variety of colors.

    Name and Availability

    • The red-rim flatworm's scientific name is "Prostheceraeus splendidus" and it is the only sea worm that can be purchased for use in a saltwater aquarium.

    Sex

    • Like the common earthworm, the red-rim flatworm is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, which means it has both male and female sex organs and can self-fertilize.

    Protection

    • The vibrant colors of the red-rim flatworm serve as a warning to predators. When threatened, the worm emits a foul-tasting mucous. Although it is low on the food chain, the red-rim flatworm is a hunter, preying on the invertebrates of the ocean.
