Name and Description
-
The fish were named after Jack Dempsey, the 1919 world champion heavyweight boxer, due to their blunt facial features, compact body and aggressive nature. Adult fish grow up to 8 inches long when mature. They have a deep purple to gray base coloration with iridescent specks of blue, gold and green peppered over their entire body. New color morphs such as the electric by Jack Dempsey are now readily available due to extensive captive breeding programs.
Natural Range and Habitat
-
In the wild, Jack Dempsey cichlids are found from Southern Mexico south through Honduras. They prefer murky, slow-moving waters with heavy vegetation and sandy or muddy substrate. They are commonly found in drainage ditches, canals and swamps where they feed on a wide range of prey including fish, insects, crustaceans and other invertebrates.
Aquarium Requirements
-
Jack Dempsey cichlids require a large aquarium when kept in captivity. A 50-gallon aquarium is the minimum size for a single Jack Dempsey cichlid, but a larger tank is required if keeping more than one fish. Jack Dempsey cichlids are hardy fish that thrive in a wide variety of environmental conditions. They prefer a sandy or muddy substrate that resembles their natural habitat. Place broken clay flowerpots, driftwood or large rocks in the aquarium to create natural borders for the cichlid to establish its territory. Jack Dempsey cichlids prefer water temperatures between 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and a pH level between 6 and 8.
Care
-
Jack Dempsey cichlids are easy to care for in home aquariums. They are excellent feeders and will readily eat a variety of prepared flake and pellet foods specially formulated for cichlids. Supplement their diet with freeze-dried foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. Offer chunks of fish or meat once each week to facilitate healthy development. Change 20 percent of the aquarium water each week to maintain water quality and prevent diseases. Jack Dempsey cichlids can live 10 to 15 years in captivity when properly cared for.
