Instructions
Wet your hands and remove the fish from the water. Be careful not to damage the fins.
Turn the fish so the underside is visible.
Check for the vent. It is found about halfway between the head and the anal fin next to the anus. The vent will be larger for a female and smaller for a male, as it requires more space to release an egg than a sperm.
Return the fish to the aquarium. Do not have the fish out of water for more than 30 seconds. This method of checking sex can be stressful for the fish, so do not do unnecessary checks.
How Can I Tell if Oscar Cichlids Are Female or Male?
Oscar cichlids are more difficult to sex than some of the other cichlid species. Sometimes the males have bigger features and a longer dorsal fin, but this is not always the case. The easiest way to determine the sex of your cichlid is to have several and watch to see if any pair off. You can then observe the spawning and see which fish are male and which are female. Other than that, the best way to tell is by examining the fish's vent, a process known as "venting," although this is not a method that a beginner should try.
