The Aztecs built chinampas, which were artificial islands made of mud and vegetation, in the shallow lakes of the Valley of Mexico. The chinampas were used to grow crops, and they were very productive. The Aztecs were able to grow a variety of crops on the chinampas, including corn, beans, squash, and tomatoes. The chinampas also provided a habitat for fish and other aquatic animals.
