What types of hippos are their?

There is only one species of hippopotamus: Hippopotamus amphibius, commonly known as the common hippopotamus or simply the hippo.

However, there are two subspecies:

* Hippopotamus amphibius amphibius: This is the nominate subspecies and is found throughout most of the hippo's range in sub-Saharan Africa.

* Hippopotamus amphibius kiboko: This subspecies is found in the west of the species' range, primarily in West Africa.

It's important to note that these two subspecies are very similar, and the differences between them are subtle. Some argue that they are not distinct subspecies at all, but rather populations within a single species.

There is also a pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis), which is a separate species entirely and much smaller than the common hippopotamus. They are found in the forests of Liberia and Sierra Leone.

So, while there are different populations and subspecies of hippos, there is only one true species of hippopotamus: Hippopotamus amphibius.
