How to Change the Water for Crayfish

Crayfish are common aquarium pets due to their small size and ease to feed and care for. However, despite their small size, their aquarium water needs to be cleaned regularly and maintained. The process to do this can be accomplished by anyone with a bit of will power and will result in a cleaner and healthier aquarium for pet crayfish.

  1. How to Change the Water for a Crayfish Tank.

    • 1

Fill your plastic container with water from your fish tank and set it aside.

Remove your crayfish from your tank by using your tongs and place it into your plastic container. Placing it in your filled plastic container will ensure the crayfish's safety as you clean the water in the tank.

Siphon 75 percent of the old water out of the tank by using your large siphon and squirt the water into your bucket. Once you have siphoned 75 percent of the water, dump your old water in your bucket and scrub the aquarium walls with your algae scrubber. Be sure to target large clumps of algae, which can be a major problem with filtration if left untouched.

Fill your bucket with tap water and refill your tank to its previous water level. Using your water de-chlorination kit, which can be bought at any pet shop, apply the de-chlorination drops as the instructions say until your chlorination level is below 1/1000th, or whichever level your kit instructs for crustacean safe levels.
