About Blackmoors Fish in Aquariums

Black moor fish are also commonly sold as black moor goldfish, and they can be a beautiful addition to an aquarium. Due to their eyes, which face in opposite directions, they do require special attention. However, with just a small amount of consideration, caring for a black moor goldfish can be a straightforward process.
  1. Features

    • Black moor goldfish are a deep rich black, with round, egg-shaped bodies. Perhaps their most notable feature is their eyes, which are bulbous and protrude from the sides of their head. They have long, flowing fins and tails. They are a dark bronze color as juveniles but darken as they age.

    Tank Set-Up

    • Due to their eyes, black moor fish do not have good vision. Their eyes can be delicate and prone to damage. Due to this fact, they should not be housed in tanks with a lot of plants in them or protruding plastic or stone structures. All of the structures in a tank containing black moor fish should be smooth so they will not injure themselves.

    Food

    • Black moor fish will eat animal and vegetable matter. They can eat frozen or flake foods that are intended for goldfish, but they will also take a wide variety of fresh treats. They will eat blood worms, brine shrimp and tubifex worms, though these should be offered to them frozen rather than live to prevent parasites. These treats can be offered once or twice a week.

    Tank Mates

    • According to Animal World black moor fish can be housed with the telescope eye goldfish or the celestial eye goldfish, which have similar vision problems and will not beat them to the food. Due to their vision issues, they cannot find food as easily as other fish and may go hungry while their tank mates gorge themselves.

    Water

    • The black moor fish are extremely hardy and do best in temperatures between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. They can live in tanks or bowls, and the more surface area the water has, the better oxygenated they will be. They can easily be kept in fish ponds, but a quick drop in temperature can be fatal. A heater is essential if you are living in a place where the temperature might drop suddenly.
