Which Kinds of Fish Work Well With Zebra Fish?

Zebra fish (Danio rerio) or zebra danios are lively family Cyprinidae creatures who call South Asia their homeland, from India to Bangladesh. Within their native grounds, zebra fish are highly prevalent. They are also common as aquarium residents in community tanks. They are appreciated not only because they have pleasant exteriors but also because they are robust and tough fish in general.

    • Most mature zebra fish are roughly 2.5 inches long, with narrow bodies, although the females are usually a little thicker than the males. The schooling fish are notable for their seemingly boundless vigor; they spend their days swiftly swimming around their surroundings. Zebra fish are striking fish, with luminous blue physiques adorned in streaks of either gold, yellow or silver that give off a zebra style impression. Out in the wild, zebra fish inhabit paddy fields, streams, ponds and ditches. In aquariums, they like to live amongst plants that are useful for hiding away. Driftwood and moderate amounts of stones are also a smart idea. Since they are highly zippy fish, they need lots of swimming space.

    Living Arrangements

    • On the whole, zebra fish are placid creatures. They need to reside in schools that consist of at least three other zebra fish. When they have the comfort of a school, they usually are at ease and much less antsy. They usually work well with other types of fish that are tranquil like they are, but it is crucial that their sizes are close. Do not place zebra fish into the same aquariums as much smaller or much larger specimens.

    Appropriate Fish

    • Zebra fish generally succeed alongside fellow danio species. Other kinds of fish that usually live harmoniously with zebra fish are corydoras, gouramis, red-tailed sharks, tetras, plecos, tiny barbs, loaches, platy fish, mollies, guppies, rasboras, swordtails and catfish.

    Fish to Avoid

    • Since zebra fish aren't too fond of being low-key, they may not be optimal matches with other fish that are particularly silent. Apart from that, they also sometimes bite fins -- particularly those of species with conspicuous and extended ones. Do not allow zebra fish to live alongside bettas and angelfish, for these exact reasons. Also keep them away from fish that often behave fiercely, such as oscars and cichlids native to South America.
