What Is the Difference Between a Red Volitan & a Black Volitan Lionfish?

Known by names such as turkey fish, black firefish and scorpion fish, the lionfish is known for its venomous bite. The Red Volitan and Black Volitan are different species of lionfish.

    • The major difference between the Red Volitan and the Black Volitan is their species classification. The Red Volitan belongs to the species Pterois russelli, while the Black Volitan is a member of the Pterois volitans classification.

    • The main difference in appearance between the Red Volitan and the Black Volitan is the lack of spots on the fins of the Red Volitan. The dorsal fins of both lionfish species contain venom that is used solely for defensive purposes. Lionfish are a popular fish for home aquariums.
