1. Swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis carabanesis)
- The Swamp buffalo, locally known as a carabao, is native to the Philippines. It is a large domesticated water buffalo found in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Swamps and wetlands are the carabao's preferred habitat. They spend most of their time wallowing in the mud and water.
- Carabaos are massive, weighing up to 1,000 kilograms and standing 1.8 meters tall. They have broad backs, sturdy legs, and impressive horns that can grow to lengths of up to 2 meters.
2. Murrah buffalo (Bubalus bubalis bubalis)
- The Murrah buffalo is a breed of domestic water buffalo that originated in the Indian subcontinent and is now widely raised in other countries. It is named after the Murrah region of Punjab in Pakistan, where it is believed to have been first developed.
- Murrah buffaloes are known for their high milk yield and relatively low milk fat content, which makes them well-suited for dairy production. They are considered gentle and docile animals that adapt well to different climatic conditions.
3. Carabao-Sahiwal crossbreed
- The Carabao-Sahiwal crossbreed is a hybrid of the Swamp buffalo and the Sahiwal cattle, also known as Sahiwal dairy buffalo. This crossbreeding aims to combine the strength and hardiness of the carabao with the higher milk yield and improved meat quality of the Sahiwal.
- Carabao-Sahiwal crossbreds are often preferred for both draft work and dairy purposes. They display improved milk yield compared to purebred carabaos and inherit some of the favorable characteristics of the Sahiwal breed.
