What do baby coi fish look like?

Koi fry (baby koi) are small and usually have a dark coloration, often appearing black or dark brown. As the koi fry progresses through its growth stages, it will start to develop its colors and patterns. Some koi may begin showing some color as early as 4-6 weeks however most will take longer ranging from 6-12 months before their true color and patterns begin to emerge. The coloration and pattern of a koi are not determined when they are fry. This is also why many koi hobbyist purchase tosai (yearlings) in order to get a better idea of what their koi may look like as they progress in growth.
