Marmots usually gather food during the summer and autumn when there is an abundance of vegetation available. They cut the vegetation with their sharp incisors and carry it back to their burrows in their cheek pouches. They store the food in chambers dug out of the ground, which can hold several kilograms of food. Marmots sleep through most of the winter, but they occasionally wake up to eat from these food caches.
