What is a tapir classified as?

A tapir is classified as a perissodactyl, which is an order of hoofed mammals that includes tapirs, rhinoceroses, and horses. Perissodactyls are characterized by having an odd number of toes on each foot, with the central toe being the largest and most weight-bearing. Tapirs have four toes on each front foot and three toes on each hind foot. They are also known for their distinctive long, prehensile snouts, which they use for grasping leaves and branches. Tapirs are found in tropical forests in Central and South America, as well as in Southeast Asia.
