Things You'll Need
- Nylon stockings
- Chia seeds
- Soil
- Flat rectangular ceramic pot bottom
- Rubber bands
- Scissors
Instructions
Purchase the items needed for the project to make your chia pet. Chia seeds can be purchased at a local garden store, and the nylon stockings can be purchased from most retail stores; color doesn't matter, but knee highs will work best for a beginner on this project.
Soak the stocking in water for a couple of minutes, remove, and place the seeds into the bottom of the stocking. The water will allow the seeds to stick to the side of the nylon stocking. The seeds sticking to the outside of the nylon stocking is where the grass will grow.
Place one cup of gardening soil into the bottom of the nylon stocking. Do not fill the bottom; leave a little wiggle room to shape your caterpillar.
Pinch and twist the section you have just placed soil into and secure with a rubber band. This is the head of the caterpillar. You can also tie off the section with a knot if rubber bands are not easily available.
Continue adding seeds, soil, and tying off with rubber bands until you reach the length of the caterpillar you wish to create. Cut off extra hose with scissors once you have reached the length you want your caterpillar to be.
Place your chia pet caterpillar on the flat rectangular flower pot bottom and water daily.
Trim your chia pet with scissors as desired to maintain a certain grass length.
