How to Breed Grub Worms

Grub worms are used for fishing, feeding birds or pet lizards and for food in survival situations. People breed them in order to sell them in bait shops to make extra money. Although they are useful, they are often considered pests in people's lawns and are difficult to get rid of. Breeding grub worms is fairly cheap to do -- and they don't require a ton of space -- or a big time commitment.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase 100 or more grub worms from a pet store, bait shop, online supplier or granary. The more grub worms you start with, the more worms you'll produce while breeding.

    • 2

Cut a hole in the lid of a short sweater container.

    • 3

Attach a window screen to the lid with hot glue to keep insets and other animals out, while keeping the grub worms from escaping.

    • 4

Add 2- to 3-inches of food to the container. Mix one part dry skim milk to three part wheat bran or 10 parts oats with 10 parts whole wheat flour, one part powdered milk and one part brewer's yeast. Put in half of a potato or a wedge of cabbage for moisture. Keep the vegetable on a piece of newspaper to keep food dry. Replace it once a week or when moldy.

    • 5

Keep the container at approximately 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the humidity at about 70-percent. Put a damp sponge in a baggie or open container for extra moisture, if needed.

    • 6

Place the grub worms in the container.

    • 7

Filter beetles out of bedding that contains eggs and little worms every one or two weeks. When grub worms are big enough, filter the worms out of the bedding. Wash the container, put the worms back in the container and put in fresh food.
