Cave lions (Panthera leo spelaea) were one of the largest lion subspecies, along with the Barbary lion. Cave lions were found throughout Africa, Eurasia during the Pleistocene epoch and became extinct around 10,000 years ago. On average, cave lions were larger than modern lions, with males reaching a length of 8.2-10.2 ft (2.5-3.1m) and standing at 3.2-3.9 ft (0.97-1.18 m) at the shoulder. Females were smaller, reaching lengths of 6.6-8.2 (2-2.5m) and standing 2.9-3.5ft (0.88-1.06m) at the shoulder.
