- Was invented by the Romans.
- Used rocks, stones, or burning materials as projectiles.
- One of the most important weapons used to siege castles.
- Could launch objects up to 350 kilograms (770 pounds) almost 200 metres (650 feet) away.
Construction
- Built of wood.
- Comprises: an arm; a beam mounted to a frame; a rotating axle to which the arm is fastened; a sling at the end of the arm; a large container (bucket) suspended by ropes that holds the projectile.
- Uses gravity and counterweight systems for power.
Operation
- The beam is pulled down via ropes.
- Pulled down all the way, it locks into place.
- The large bucket holding the projectile is raised and fixed onto the sling that is attached to the rear end of the beam.
- The counter-weight is released, which enables the beam to swing forwards.
- As it swings, the beam carries the sling which releases the projectile.
