What are the VPP designations?

There are three levels of VPP designations:

Star

Merit

Demonstration

Star

* Worksites with injury and illness (I and I) rates at 50% below the national average

* Maintain safety and health management systems through the plan-do-check-act cycle

* Demonstrate exemplary performance in risk identification and control

* Have effective injury and illness prevention and control programs

* Actively engage in continuous safety and health improvement

Merit

* Worksites with injury and illness rates at 75% below the national average

* Establish the essential elements of an occupational safety and health management system based on the plan-do-check-act cycle

* Develop and implement written safety and health policies

* Conduct new employee orientations that include safety and health training

* Identify, evaluate and control workplace hazards

* Use safety and health information

Demonstration

* Worksites with injury and illness rates at 90% below the national average

* Demonstrate outstanding safety and health programs that serve as a model for the industry

In addition to the three designations above, there are two other VPP designations that are not based on injury and illness rates:

Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP)

This designation is for worksites that have demonstrated a commitment to safety and health beyond the requirements of OSHA.

Partnership for Innovation and Excellence (PInE)

This designation is for worksites that have developed innovative solutions to safety and health challenges.
