Chinchilla Supply Checklist

Chinchillas are rodents that look like a cross between a bunny and a squirrel. When kept as pets, chinchillas can live well into their teenage years if they are properly cared for. While the chinchilla is low maintenance as far as pets go, it does have specific needs that must be addressed in order to be healthy. Having the supplies necessary for proper care on hand before you bring it home will help ensure it lives a happy and healthy life.
  1. Housing

    • In order for your chinchilla to be happy and healthy it needs adequate housing. The cage should have adequate ventilation and room for your chinchilla to hop around. You need a cage that is at least 2 feet wide, 2 feet long and 2 feet high. Openings in the cage should be no more than an inch in diameter. The more levels the cage has the better, because chinchillas like to jump. The cage should be made of metal or wood. Plastic is fine as long as it is in an area your chinchilla can't chew.

    Feeding Supplies

    • To feed your chinchilla you will need to get a water bottle and bowl. It is best to get a ceramic bowl for your chinchilla because it can be washed easily and your chinchilla won't be able to tip it over if it sits on the edge. Buy a chinchilla pellet; it is advisable to buy the same pellet the chinchilla is currently eating. If you wish to change to a different pellet, do so by mixing the two gradually or your pet may get an upset stomach. Get timothy hay, or alfalfa cubed or loose. Treats include raisins and dried fruit.

    Cage Accessories

    • In order for your chinchilla to live happily and healthily in its cage it needs s few things to make it comfortable. Bedding for the bottom of the cage needs to be selected carefully, otherwise it can harm your pet. It is best to use aspen, kiln dried pine or shredded paper or newspaper. The oils on regular pine and cedar shavings can cause respiratory problems. Dust bath is also required for chinchillas. The dust can be purchased in the small pet section of your pet store, along with a container for your chinchilla to take the dust bath in. Your chinchilla also needs a place to hide; a box, tube or small pet house works fine.

    Toys and Recreation

    • Chinchillas love to chew, so you need wood sticks, a pumice stone or a salt lick so they can satisfy that chewing urge and keep their teeth from over growing. A wheel will help them get an adequate amount of exercise when they are stuck in their cage. Attachable ledges are also fun for chinchillas because they like to climb.
