How to Litter Box Train a Chinchilla

Though it is possible to litter train a chinchilla, it's important to remember that chinchillas do not have the same instincts as cats when it comes to being programmed to use a litter box. Since there is not a way for you to verbally communicate with your chinchilla to tell it where it should be using the restroom, you need to prepare the litter box in a way that demonstrates to the chinchilla that the litter box is a place for its waste. The process of litter box training your chinchilla requires constant preparation to enforce litter box use so the animal can become familiar with the routine.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the litter box in the corner of the cage, farthest from food and water, and cover the bottom with kiln-dried pine shavings. If your chinchilla has a place in the cage where it tends to use the bathroom at more often, put the litter box there.

    • 2

Put any urinated bedding inside the litter box so the chinchilla can smell the urine on the bedding and identify the litter box as a place to urinate.

    • 3

Scoop up your chinchillas droppings and put them into the litter box to demonstrate to the chinchilla that fecal waste also belongs in the litter box.

    • 4

Clean out the litter box daily and continue to put soiled bedding in the litter box after cleanings. Continue this routine for several months.
