How to Cure a Fur Chewing Chinchilla

Chinchillas are rodents known for their long, soft fur, which makes them enjoyable to hold and pet. Some chinchillas develop the bad habit of chewing on their fur, oftentimes nearly down to the skin. While this is usually only of cosmetic concern, it can be an annoying and concerning habit. Some chinchillas may also chew on others' fur. There are several things you can do to try to stop this behavior.

Instructions

    • 1

Isolate the chinchilla from any other chinchillas in the household. The other chinchillas can be leading to stress in the chewer, which can cause it to begin chewing. If you have not witnessed chewing but have observed chewed fur, it is also possible that another chinchilla is chewing on the chinchilla with shorter fur, so moving the chinchilla by itself will allow the fur to grow back and alert you to another chinchilla potentially being the problem.

    • 2

Relocate the chinchilla to another area of your home. Fur chewing can be brought about by stresses related to location, as different chinchillas will react differently to different areas of a house. Try to move the chinchilla to an area where it will be in a setting dissimilar to its former location, noting such things as exposure to outside light, proximity to walls and human activity in the room.

    • 3

Purchase high-quality food for your chinchilla from a respected food manufacturer. A pet store employee should be able to help you if you are unsure if a food company is reputable. Lower-quality food can lead to an unhealthy chinchilla and can trigger your pet to begin chewing.

    • 4

Alter your interactions with the chinchilla. Fur chewing could be a sign that the animal is becoming upset or stressed from a lack of time with playmates, and playing with it more may cure the problem.

Take your chinchilla to a veterinary professional if chewing persists. Your vet may be able to diagnose the cause of your chinchilla's chewing by observing it and can propose a remedy for the problem.
