Early life and education
Marcia Farrugia was born on 1 December 1963 in Sliema, Malta. She received her early education at St. Clare College in Pembroke and then went on to study law at the University of Malta, where she obtained a Doctor of Laws degree in 1988.
Professional career
After graduating from university, Marcia Farrugia worked as a legal consultant before entering politics. She also served as a member of the Malta Employers' Association and the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association.
Political career
Marcia Farrugia's political career began in 1998 when she was elected to the House of Representatives for the Labour Party. She was re-elected in 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2017.
During her time in Parliament, Marcia Farrugia held several ministerial positions. She served as Parliamentary Secretary for Industry between 2003 and 2008. In 2013, she was appointed as Minister for Education, Employment, and the Family, a position she held until 2017.
As Minister for Education, Employment, and the Family, Marcia Farrugia oversaw the implementation of several major reforms, including the introduction of free childcare for children under three years of age. She also led the development of a new national curriculum and worked to improve the quality of education in Malta.
Presidency of Malta
On 4 April 2022, Marcia Farrugia was elected as the President of Malta. She is the first woman to hold this position. As President, she is the head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. She also has the power to appoint the prime minister and other senior government officials.

Marcia Farrugia is married and has two children.
