Heat stroke: Chinchillas cannot tolerate high temperatures and can die from heat stroke if they're exposed to temperatures over 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Symptoms of heat stroke include panting, lethargy, and red or swollen ears. If you think your chinchilla is suffering from heat stroke, immediately move it to a cool environment and offer it water.
Trauma: Chinchillas can be injured by falling or being dropped, by other pets, or by rough handling. If a chinchilla is injured, it's important to take it to the vet immediately.
Poisoning: Chinchillas can be poisoned by eating toxic plants, chemicals, or other substances. If you suspect your chinchilla may have been poisoned, it's important to take it to the vet immediately.
Old age: The average lifespan of a chinchilla is 10 to 15 years; although some may live as long as 20 years. It's important to take your chinchilla to the vet regularly for checkups, especially as it ages.
