How to Clean an African Frog Dwarf Tank

African dwarf frogs are a small, social, amphibious pet that can grow to around 1.5 inches in length. For the most part they live in the water, but are air breathers. Every so often they will emerge from water for a short period of time. These frogs are sensitive to changes in water, and must have a chlorine free environment to live in. Keeping their tank clean is part of raising a healthy frog.

Prepare a change of water for your tank. Fill a clean bucket with tap water, and let the water sit for a few days. This process allows the water to go stale, and to chlorine to evaporate from the water. If you don't want to wait a few days for the chlorine to evaporate, you can add in a water conditioner. Follow the directions on the bottle for dosage information.

Remove one quarter of the water from your tank, and replace with the chlorine-free water.

Clean the gravel on the bottom of the tank, if you have gravel. You can use a gravel vacuum that can be purchased from the local pet store. It uses gravity and suction to clean the waste from the gravel. Be careful not to squish, or siphon your frog while cleaning. If you have chosen not to have a substrate and just have a glass bottom, you can use a turkey baster to remove any waste.

Remove and clean any decorations, plastic or silk plants you may have in the tank. You can clean them under running hot water to remove any algae or slime growth.

Change your filter cartridge if you use a filter on the tank. Make certain that you wash the cartridge well under running water to remove all loose carbon powder. A filter is not always necessary if you keep just frogs in your tank.
