What Bugs Can I Feed Frogs?

Frogs are amphibians and are found all over the world. They begin their life in the water and spend the remainder living both on the land and in the water. Because they are cold-blooded, their body temperature adapts to their surroundings, so they get in the water to cool off and lay in the sun to warm up. They live in or around all freshwater ponds, lakes and rivers, so it makes sense that they eat bugs and insects that also live in those areas.
  1. Crickets

    • Crickets are a favorite meal choice for frogs. Crickets are most active at night and frogs have keen eyesight, making the crickets relatively easy to catch. Since frogs also have excellent hearing, once the crickets start singing their song, frogs can hone in on their location and the crickets are easy prey.

    Flies

    • Frogs have an extremely long tongue that shoots out, wraps around its prey and then returns to their mouth to send the prey down their throat. Since there is such an abundance of flies, they are an easy target for frogs. Even while a fly is in the air, a frog can still easily catch it because of their tongue's quickness.

    Moths

    • Moths can be considered a pest in many parts of the world because they can destroy trees and vegetation. This is why it's a good thing that frogs eat them. Moths are relatively easy for frogs to catch when using their eyesight and quick tongue. Since moths live near the plants and trees they feed on, they are frequently found in the areas where frogs live.

    Dragonflies

    • Dragonflies are found around lakes, ponds and rivers because their larvae live in the water. Because of this, they are an easy food choice for frogs. They are fast when flying, but when at rest they cannot walk well, even though they have six legs. Though frogs can catch dragonflies in the air, many times they catch them when at rest because it's much less work for the frog.
