What Is the Staple Diet of the Pacman Frog?

Pacman frogs--also known as Ceratophrys or South American horned frogs--are popular amphibian pets. The nickname comes from Pac-Man, the classic video game character. Feeding and taking care of these frogs is fairly simple.
  1. Identification

    • Pacman frogs have large, fleshy tips above their eyes resembling horns. They come in a variety of bright colors.

    The Name

    • Pacman frogs earned the nickname because of their appearance and appetite. They are large and round with wide mouths and a voracious appetite--just like the video game character.

    Diet

    • Pacman frogs are carnivorous. Feed juveniles small crickets and worms. Adults can eat the same things, but add small mice or fish for added nutrition. Adding calcium powder once every few weeks helps keep your frog in optimum health.

    Warning

    • Pacman frogs in the wild eat other frogs as a large part of their diet, so avoid keeping them together, especially if one is much smaller than the other. Make sure to keep your hands at a distance while feeding so your frog doesn't mistake your finger for a meal.

    Lifespan

    • Pacman frogs can live for more than 10 years. Take good care of your frog, and it'll have a long, healthy life.
