Things You'll Need
- Frog spawn
- Water
- Container for spawn
Instructions
Acquire frog spawn from local pools or streams where you see frogs living, not from a public park pond or on private land. Frog spawn looks like jelly in a pond.
Place your spawn in a container that can hold water and are large enough to allow the frogs to grow. This can be a child's plastic swimming pool, garden pond or a plastic garbage bin.
Keep clean water in your container at all times. If you get water from a stream, make sure it is from a location that is upstream from factories so there are no contaminants. If you use tap water, let it sit in the sun for 5 to 7 days to remove all the chlorine. If you are limited on time, you can buy de-chlorinating drops for your water. Make sure to let it sit overnight for the drops to fully work.
Watch the spawn grown into tadpoles.
Feed the tadpoles lettuce. Boil it for about 15 minutes and chop it up. Feed the lettuce to the tadpoles every day. When they get bigger, feed them bloodworms and crickets.
Monitor the air temperature. If there is a cold spell, your spawn and tadpoles will grow at a slower rate. Normally they will go from spawn to adult frogs in 6 to 12 weeks. Late spring through summer temperatures are the best for frog rearing.
Keep hiding places and vegetation in your frog's pond. These will prepare your growing frogs for real world life. Good things to use are lily pads and rocks that sit above and below the waterline.
