Poison Frogs Habitat

Poison frogs are brilliantly colored amphibians that reside in rainforests. Their toxicity varies from one species to another, and they are generally between 3/4 and 2-1/2 inches in length.
  1. Significance

    • Originally from South America, the poison dart frog got its name from native tribes in the region that used the frogs' poison on the ends of their darts and arrows to create a more deadly weapon.

    Humid Environments

    • Many species of poison frogs prefer to live in a very humid and tropical environment, which makes a dense rainforest ideal.

    Locations by Country

    • Countries home to poison frogs include Bolivia, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Suriname, French Guyana, Peru, Panama and Nicaragua.

    Tree Climbing

    • Many poison frogs chose to live in trees, with their homes being up to 30 feet from the ground.

    Eggs and Environment

    • Because moisture is so important to the lives of some species of poison frogs, they prefer to lay their eggs on leaves that hang over bodies of water. This allows the tadpoles, which cannot live on land, to fall directly into the water when hatched.
