How to Make a Habitat for Frogs and Salamanders

Frogs and salamanders are low maintenance animals, both in the wild and in captivity. The best types to have as pets are the larger species, as they are more hardy than the smaller ones. Their habitats are easy to set up and maintain and they require little socialization from people. Aside from daily feedings, they don't need much attention. Frogs and salamanders can be easily housed together since salamanders need a land habitat and frogs need both land and water in their habitat. The water portion of the habitat can act as drinking water for both amphibians.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the water container in the bottom of the aquarium. Frogs need a considerable amount of water to swim in, so your water container should ideally take up one-third of the aquarium. You can use a Tupperware container or specialized container that you can buy at a pet store.

    • 2

Spread 4 inches of potting soil on the bottom of the aquarium. Avoid getting soil in the water container. Spray water on the soil to moisten it.

    • 3

Make small holes to plant the small plants in. It is best to leave them in their containers when you plant them. This makes it easier to preserve them when you remove them to clean the aquarium and replace the soil.

    • 4

Place small logs and pieces of bark around the aquarium for the frogs and salamanders to climb on. You can place one in the water container as well.

    • 5

Place a ventilated cover on top of the aquarium to hold in humidity.

    • 6

Place the aquarium out of direct sunlight in an area that maintains room temperature (65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit).
