How to Make a Vivarium Humid

Several species of exotic pets need or prefer a humid environment. Humidity-loving animals include most land amphibians, which have porous skin, and some reptiles and invertebrates. Raising the humidity in a vivarium basically means increasing the moisture content of the air. There are several ways to do this, and, singly or in combination, these methods help to create the right environment for your pet.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a hygrometer. These gadgets measure humidity and are typically available from garden supply stores.

    • 2

Research the ideal humidity for your pet. Aim to maintain this level in the vivarium. Tiger salamanders, for example, need humidity of about 70 percent.

    • 3

Provide a wider water bowl, if your pet drinks from one. The greater the surface area of the water bowl, the more water evaporates, so increasing the humidity.

    • 4

Add damp sphagnum moss, if appropriate for the species, to further raise the humidity. Replace the moss at least once a week.

    • 5

Mist the tank as required if the humidity is still not high enough. Normally, you should avoid spraying your pet directly.
