What Is an Active Frog That Beginners Can Take Care of?

Frogs are common amphibians found throughout the world. More than 3,800 currently living varieties have been identified. Many of these species reside within the United States. Because of their gentleness and exotic aspect, frogs are popular pets. Active frogs that beginning frog owners generally can take care of successfully range from the relatively small tree frog to the largest frog in the United States, the bullfrog.
  1. Green Frog

    • Compared to most frogs, the green frog is a larger-bodied frog. Its natural habitat is the eastern part of Canada and the United States. A green frog can grow to almost 4 inches long. Its skin is folded and layered, and many ridges run across its body. This frog species is more active in water than on land. A green frog is more socially accepting of humans than some other kinds of frogs; it is simple to handle and does not mind being held. It likes being moved around and does not stay in one particular habitat for long. The green frog does not need to be fed daily; two to three times per week is sufficient. Its water tank needs to be changed only once each week. Cleaning the frog's enclosure is also minimal.

    Tree Frog

    • The tree frog is a common garden frog found throughout the United States. Its striking lime-green coloring and bright red eyes make it a favorite among pet owners. Tree frogs are active creatures, and, as their name implies, are often found dwelling in trees. These frogs are active only at night. They jump, hop and do whatever it takes to catch their prey. They usually feed on insects in and around a house but also require a daily supply of flies to keep them nourished and healthy. Tree frogs are more social than some other kinds of frogs. They do not require a lot of upkeep and need only the bare minimum for shelter. Because of their popularity as pets, more products and services are designed for tree frogs than any other frog species.

    Bullfrog

    • The largest pet frogs, bullfrogs can grow to almost 6 inches long. They originated in the United States and also are in Canada. Bullfrogs are common pets in the southern United States. Simple to care for, they require only about a 10-gallon aquarium tank for a home. They eat anything that is small enough to swallow. Bullfrogs are active in water and on land.

    Northern Leopard Frog

    • The northern leopard frog, Rana pipiens, is small and requires only a small enclosure. It can live in water and land environments. Because of the the northern leopard frog's simple-to-care-for behavior, it is used primarily for research.
