How to Tell if Your African Dwarf Frogs Are Boys or Girls

The gender of African dwarf frogs (Hymenochirus boettgeri) is not always immediately apparent, especially outside the breeding season. However, a few physical and behavioral characteristics provide an indication of whether the frogs are males or females. If you plan to breed the frogs, it might be worth getting a second opinion from an experienced breeder. If you just want to know out of curiosity, you can form a fair idea yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Compare the sizes of the frogs, if you have more than one. Mature female African dwarfs are usually a good bit larger than the males.

    • 2

Listen to the frogs. A singing African dwarf frog is a male.

    • 3

Examine the frog's armpits. Males often have visible white spots below their forearms.

    • 4

Look at the frog's abdomen. Females sometimes have a slightly more protruding tail stub than the males.

    • 5

Observe the frog's behavior. During the breeding season the males court the females. The females become motionless when approached by the males. If you see the frogs mating, the one tightly clasping the other is the male.
