How to Feed a Southern Leopard Frog

Leopard frogs are one of the most common types of frogs in the United States. Southern leopard frogs live in many states, including Texas, Iowa, Kentucky, and all along the eastern coast from New York to Florida. They are light green or yellowish, with darker spots along their bodies, hence the name. Leopard frogs are adaptable to a variety of conditions and relatively easy to care for. Watching as they catch and eat their meals can be entertaining.

Determine the age of your frog so you will know how often and how much you should feed it. Frogs usually reach sexual maturity when they are 2 to 3 years old. A frog younger than 2 is considered a juvenile. Young frogs should get slightly more food than adults should.

    • 2

Feed the frog a diet that consists mainly of live crickets. These nutritious insects are sold at pet supply stores.

    • 3

Feed an adult frog between two and six insects about two or three times a week, spacing out the feeding times. Feed slightly more to juvenile frogs. How much your frog eats will depend on the season and the size of the frog. If your frog leaves food untouched, reduce the feeding. Conversely, if the frog eats quickly, you can give it an extra item or two. Monitor your frog's eating habits to determine the correct amount of food.

Supplement the frog's diet with other live insects, such as silk, earth, or wax worms, cockroaches and woodlice. Leopard frogs also eat aquatic creatures, such as live feeder guppies and live ghost shrimp. You can buy some of these and catch others. Place the aquatic creatures in the water in the frog's habitat. Some leopard frogs prefer to catch their prey in the water; others prefer land insects. Monitor your frog's eating habits and tailor feeding to the frog's preferences.

Sprinkle a mineral and vitamin supplement powder onto the frog's food every two to four feedings. This will ensure that the frog is receiving the proper nutrients.
