How to Keep the Aquarium of an African Dwarf Frog Clean

African dwarf frogs are enjoyable to own and simple to care for. Because of their tiny size, they are a favorite with pet owners who don't have enough space to accommodate a large fish tank. African dwarfs are more fragile than many other species of frog and require impeccable aquarium hygiene to maintain good health.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed your frogs only as much as they can immediately eat. African dwarf frogs are actually quite clean, and much of the waste in their aquarium is likely uneaten food rather than excrement. Uneaten food can encourage bacterial growth and raise unhealthy chemical levels.

    • 2

Make sure your aquarium has the correct temperature. African dwarf frogs require a moderate temperature, neither too hot or too cold. Never allow the temperature of the tank to rise above 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Higher temperatures allow algae to bloom.

    • 3

Clean the filter under running water at least once a month and replace the cartridge according to the manufacturer's instructions. A dirty filter cannot function properly and will allow waste to accumulate in the tank.

    • 4

Change 1/4 to 1/3 of the water every few weeks. Aquariums contain important Ph-balancing bacteria that are important to the tank ecosystem. Frequent, partial water changes preserve this balance far better than infrequent, total water changes.

    • 5

Suction the bottom of the tank each week using a tank siphon, available at any pet supply store. Pay particular attention to this step if your aquarium has a gravel bottom. Gravel tends to trap waste and can be a breeding ground for bacteria.
