Red tide is a common name for a harmful algal bloom (HAB) caused by certain types of microscopic algae called dinoflagellates. These algae produce toxins that can accumulate in shellfish and fish, making them poisonous to humans and other animals. Dinoflagellate blooms can also cause discoloration of the water, making it appear red or brown.
