How To Tell the Gender of Golden Geckos
-
There are certain distinguishing factors in order to tell the difference between the male golden gecko and the female. The male typically grows to around seven inches long. The females are smaller at between five and six inches. It is difficult to tell the difference until they are six to eight inches long. At this point, you can check out the underside close to their back legs. It is better to not hold them, but to observe while they are sticking to glass in their aquarium. Males have rows of pores that are dark in color and they have a raised "V" shaped near their vent. Females' pores are usually not noticeable.
Cage Maintenance
-
The cage décor needs climbing vines and branches that offer a place to hide. They are considered to be hyper reptiles that suffer from tension and will bite if they are disturbed. They do not require a UV light, but a nocturnal heat lamp can give them the heat that they need. A heater could also be attached under the tank that would offer the necessary heat. Moss can be used to aid in keeping the humidity in the cage and more cover for hiding. Bed-A-Beast, a substrate, can be used for lizard bedding. It is advised to avoid Repti-bark or reptile carpet.
Golden Gecko Care
-
The cage and gecko need to be misted twice a day at least. A water dish is an aid offering increased humidity. Golden geckos, however, will not typically drink from the water dish. A golden gecko's diet would need to include a variety of mealworms, crickets, super worms and wax worms. Dust calcium/vitamin powder in the cage once a week. Make sure that the crickets that are not eaten are removed from the cage because they have a tendency to bite the gecko's legs. Clean out all fecal matter and dead crickets regularly. Keep the water bowl clean, as well. People who handle the golden geckos should make sure and wash their hands thoroughly after handling them.
