How to Tell If a Gecko Is a Male or a Female?

From the top, geckos aren't noticeably male or female, although males are generally larger. Luckily, once the gecko reaches sexual maturity, there are three easy ways to tell whether it is a male or a female. If you flip the gecko over, you'll notice a series of clues that will tell you if the gecko is a male (in the clues' presence) or a female (in their absence).

Instructions

    • 1

Gently hold the gecko with its underside facing you. You can also wait until the gecko is pressed up against the glass of its aquarium to study it.

    • 2

Locate the femoral pores, which are located on the hind legs of males (see references for a picture). If you cannot locate them, you're holding a female.

    • 3

Locate the preanal pores, which appears on males in an upside-down V-shape just before the abdomen becomes attaches to the tail.

    • 4

Locate the two hemipenal bulges, which are located at the base of the tail on males.
