How do pygmy hippos behave?

Pygmy hippos are highly social animals and live in small family groups of usually two to five individuals, but sometimes as many as eight or more. Adult males are not territorial, but they do establish a dominance hierarchy. Males use their tusks and canine teeth to fight for dominance and to defend themselves and their family groups. Pygmy hippos are mostly nocturnal and spend their days in the water or in burrows dug under river banks. They come out at night to feed and graze. Pygmy hippos are herbivorous and their diet consists mainly of grasses, leaves, fruits, and bark.
