Here's why:
* Autotomy is a survival tactic: When a gerbil is threatened, it can detach its tail to escape a predator.
* The tail doesn't regenerate: Unlike some reptiles, the tail does not grow back completely.
* Scarring may occur: The end of the tail will usually heal with a scar, and there will be no fur in that area.
If you notice your gerbil has lost part of its tail, there is no need to panic. As long as the wound is clean and there is no bleeding, the gerbil should recover quickly.
