Instructions
Checking Gerbil Teeth
Pick up the gerbil by placing the palm of your hand against the gerbil and gently wrap your fingers around the gerbil's body. Slide your thumb behind the gerbil's head, and place your index finger under the gerbil's chin. This will allow your to have control of the gerbils head while checking the gerbil's teeth. Use thick gloves if your gerbil is prone to biting or has not been handled frequently.
Gently open the gerbil's mouth using your free hand. Most gerbils will not mind having their teeth examined especially if they trust you and are used to being handled.
Check the color of the gerbil's teeth. Healthy gerbil teeth are yellow in color, not white like human teeth. If teeth are discolored, consult a veterinarian.
Check for overgrown teeth or any abnormalities, like cavities. Overgrowth happens because the gerbil does not have enough chew toys or pieces of wood to chew on. If any abnormalities are present, contact a veterinarian.
