How Do You Hold a Gerbil?

Gerbils are a common pet for youngsters. They are often tamer and cleaner than other rodents. Gerbils enjoy interaction and will be less prone to biting the more they are handled, according to Dr. Theresa A. Fuess, an information specialist with the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Handling a gerbil correctly will ensure a good relationship between owner and pet. There are several ways to safely pick up a gerbil.
  1. Cupping the Animal

    • Using both hands, scoop up the animal by cupping under the gerbil's midsection and feet and gently lifting. Until you and your gerbil get to know one another, you may want to scoot the animal into a cup, pick the cup up and then let the gerbil crawl out into your hand.

    For Restraint

    • Place your index finger and thumb at the base of the gerbil's tail. With your other hand pinch the skin at the base of the neck. Turn the gerbil over into the palm of your hand and catch the tail with your little finger. This method is often used when attempting to restrain the animal.

    Whole Hand

    • Place the palm of your hand over the gerbil's back with your index finger to one side of the gerbil's neck and your middle finger on the other side of the neck. Encircle the animal's middle with your thumb and little finger then lift.

    Warning: Never by the Tip

    • It may be your first impulse to pick a gerbil up by its tail, but this is generally discouraged. Some people may use their index finger and thumb to put pressure on the base of the gerbil's tail and lift up.

Never pick a gerbil up by the tip of its tail. The tip of a gerbil's tail is fragile and the skin could tear, exposing the bone. Amputation of the tail may then be needed.
